Thanksgiving Menu: Appetizers + Cocktails

Let me set the Thanksgiving scene for you:  it’s afternoon at my parents’ house out in the country.  A long dining table has been set with sparkling tableware, candles glowing in metallic vases nestled in between mini pumpkins, gourds, Fall leaves and vases of dahlias and foliage from their Tuscan-esque garden.  Looking out the large picture windows and French doors, your eyes are drawn to the manicured landscaping and raised garden beds that frame the view of their 7 acres, with rolling hills and pastures filled with cattle next door.

Inside there’s a football game playing on TV (always!) while we sip on hot mugs of cider or glasses of wine.  Relatives begin pouring in, soon to number a full house of 20-30+, and aside from the love of family and football and festive drinks there’s just one thing on our minds: FOOD!  Oh, glorious food.  One thing is for sure, our family knows how to eat well!  Fabulous appetizers are always our first course, eaten on little plates we can walk around with while we meander between the game on TV and chatting with relatives and chasing after small children.   At Thanksgiving, the host is responsible for cooking the turkey (and sometimes also a ham, wild game or fresh-caught salmon or steelhead–we do live in the Pacific Northwest, after all) and then the rest of us pitch in by bringing the appetizers, side dishes, bread/rolls and desserts.

I’m guilty of being a recipe hoarder…oh good, you too?…so as I attempt to pare down the thousands of recipes I have pinned on Pinterest and make my Thanksgiving menu, I will be sharing some menu inspiration with you over the next few weeks.  Today we’ll start with some mouth-watering appetizers and holiday-worthy cocktails…but just remember to leave some room for the main course!  And especially leave room for dessert!  (My family is well known for it’s I’ll-just-have-a-sliver-of-everything dessert sampling habits at the holidays.)
